Sharing our essential design tips.

Whether you think you’ve got a creative eye or not, it’s true that a lot of design decisions actually come down to education and intuition.

Over the last seven years styling homes around Perth, we’ve certainly learnt a few things the hard way when it comes to perfecting a beautiful space. You know what we’re talking about here; those rooms that swallow up a sizeable modular sofa or those pesky electrical cords that totally ruin the vibe in a room.

So, we thought we’d jump at the chance to share our tried and tested essential design tips that will ensure you don’t have to suffer the same lessons and instead, can create beautifully styled spaces with ease.

Measure the room size.

Nailing the size and scale of a room is absolutely critical when it comes to design and don’t let anyone tell you differently! You could have the most insane furniture pieces in a space, but if the size hasn’t been perfected, the room will crumble.

We encourage you to physically measure the room, and even the furniture pieces, marking them out on the floor. This will be so useful in physically visualising the room and how all the different furniture pieces will come together to create a cohesive look.

If you’re struggling to make a smaller room work, it’s time to get creative and strategic. Opt for slimmer, more slender pieces that can swivel and be manipulated, adding different functions to the room with the same number of items.

Create illusions in your favour.

There is nothing worse than trying to work with a tricky space, especially one that limits your design options. Designing spaces can be hard enough without any added pressure!

If you’re working with tricky spaces that are on the smaller or darker side, don’t forget that you can always create illusions to make the space work in your favour.

Consider choosing low furniture that makes the room appear taller, or opt for a large mirror that will help the space feel wider and reflect light to make it brighter. You’ll be amazed how these smart hacks can really transform your home when employed correctly.

Follow a theme.

Whilst there is never a right and wrong answer when it comes to design, and maximalism is certainly making a strong comeback in 2021 design, it can be so overwhelming when people accumulate all of their favourite belongings in one room. Instead, we suggest finding a theme and sticking to it to avoid visual chaos.

If you need some inspiration, there are so many colour palette generators online, and you can even find some on Pinterest. Using this gives you an overview of what your room will look like with these colours on.

We also encourage you to let your love of art take the centre stage and use these pieces to inspire a theme throughout your room. For example, take a wall painting's palette and use it as the room's guide colours.

Think about living in comfort.

Now, when it comes to choosing furniture pieces, we always suggest investing in quality pieces that are well-made and comfortable - pieces that are timeless and will suit your lifestyle for years to come.

This is especially important for families who need to purchase items that are relatively kid-proof. Opt for fabrics and materials that are durable, don’t stain or are easily washed and maintained no matter what life throws at them!

Symmetry is magic!

One of our key strategies in creating a balanced room is through the employment of symmetry. Perfect symmetry soothes the eye and gives almost the same calming effect as a minimalist space.

We always try to make furniture items symmetrical around the main focal point of the room, whether that is a wooden fireplace, television or statement pieces or art. It can be easily executed with a matching pair of occasional chairs or sofas.
