Packing to move?

Relocating? Leaving the nest? Selling your home? Or, just sold it? Then, it’s time to vacate!

Packing to move is probably something you have been putting off and sure, there is a lot of work involved, but the moving process is not actually as intimidating as it seems!

At Perth Style Company, moving homes is something we do day in, day out. We are the best in the business and over the years, have compiled all of our tried and tested strategies to make moving home a breeze.

The Essentials

Putting together a battle plan is key to winning the fight! You are going to need to pick up some essential tools to make moving easier in the long run.

Truck

If moving a fair distance, investing in a truck is the best thing you can do! It is so much more worthwhile making one or two trips with bigger loads than multiple in a car or van. Organising hire for a 12T truck for move day will speed up the process and help make the move more efficient with less back and forth between properties.

Organise boxes

There are plenty of service providers available that sell or lease cardboard boxes which are ideal for moving homes. These will help pack your belongings together in organised groups and allow for easy stacking during transportation. They are strong and sturdy, which will help protect all of your beloved things, preventing any potential damage in transit.

Bubble wrap

Not wanting to lose some of your treasures and fragile items during the move? Well, you're going to need bubble wrap and lots of it! It might seem like common sense, but an extra layer of protection will keep breakable items safe.

Recruit your team

It will likely take some bribing, but having a few extra sets of hands will make the process of moving less painful and much more efficient. Some furniture items and white-goods can be heavy so it is easy to injure yourself carrying things on your own. Schedule in the date ahead of time and get the post-move beers on ice, stat!

Before the Move

In the weeks leading up to the move, there are tasks you can complete to prepare for move day. Having these done prior will ensure that no one is held up on the day and time is not wasted.

Empty drawers

Moving furniture with items inside can make them unnecessarily heavier and potentially cause damage to the items inside.

Disassemble bulky items

Unused beds, shelving units and outdoor settings that can be easily taken apart should be packed down. Ensure that screws are clearly taped to each piece or put aside in a safe space. You are going to need them later!

The pack down

It’s time to use those boxes. We suggest establishing a packing station and bringing your smaller items and decorative accessories like lamps and photo frames to this space. From there, you can visually see everything that needs to be packed, begin wrapping in bubble wrap and fill the boxes. We recommend filling boxes with stronger bigger items on the bottom and building up to smaller items on the top. (P.S. Don’t forget to tape the bottom of the box before filling!)

Using a removalist?

If you have hired a removalist to assist with the moving of the furniture, it is important to respect their time, abilities and work, in order to get the best value out of the service. If there are valuable items that need extra care, communicate this to them prior to the move. It is even possible for some moving companies to come and assess the job prior to move day. This makes sure they are fully equipped with the necessary team and tools for the move. It is important that prior “before the move” steps are completed so that removalists can be efficient with their work, costing you less!
