Our all-natural Spring cleaning guide.

It’s finally springtime which means we are one step closer to our favourite time of year, Summer! And, if you’re anything like us, then it’s the time of year where you suddenly get the notion to clean and organise your entire home from top to bottom.

Spring is the perfect time to start fresh, hit the reset button, come out of our winter hibernations and get scrubbing! In the Spring light, you tend to notice all of the dust and cobwebs in those hard to reach places that you’ve turned a blind eye to over the last couple of weeks and now is the time to tackle them!

And, as we are forever on a quest toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future, we’ve put together our top tips for an all-natural Spring clean that will have your home looking and feeling it’s best in one weekend!

Put a plan in place.

Not sure where to start? We suggest making a plan of action by compiling a clear list of everything you need to tackle and when. Once you have identified what you need to achieve, it is usually much easier to determine exactly what supplies you'll need to complete the tasks and what schedule you’re working to.

Keep in mind, if you’re trying to complete this Spring clean over one weekend - you need to pencil in some break time to relax! We suggest working in intervals of 30-45 minutes of focused cleaning time then set a timer and treat yourself to a well-deserved break before you get back into it.

Get decluttering .

We never really realise how many things we accumulate overtime until we stop and take a look around. One of our favourite ways to begin a thorough Spring clean is with a quick declutter which can make the world of difference. Start with your wardrobe before moving onto your home office, spare room and kitchen cabinets and pantry. Be sure to keep two bags handy - one for items going straight in the bin and the other for items to be donated to your local charity.

Then, move room-by-room.

Now it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty! Move from each room of the house and clean, starting at the top of the room and working your way down. Wipe down the ceiling, fan and light fixtures, the walls and all the furniture in the room before getting to the floors. For a proper Spring clean, be sure to move all furniture out of the room to ensure your floors are left sparkling!

Our Eco-Friendly Cleaning Hacks.

Natural cleaning solutions can save time, money and reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals. To help you keep your home super clean and healthy this Spring, we have some suggestions for natural cleaning remedies.

Stock up your cupboards.

Household staples such as white vinegar, salt, baking soda, borax, and lemons are the fundamental ingredients to a wide variety of natural cleaning solutions. In fact, our very favourite scented all-purpose cleaner is made up of just vinegar, lemon, rosemary and warm water. See our recipe below;

What you'll need:

Combine the above ingredients together, pour into a spray bottle, shake, and then let infuse for a week before using. Once done, you can use the natural solution to remove hard water stains, clean trash cans, wipe away wall smudges, and much more. Besides a fresh scent, the lemon rind may help boost cleaning power. Caution: Do not use acidic cleaners on granite, as they will etch the stone.

Give up the paper towel .

A deep household clean could send you back numerous rolls of paper towel. Save the trees and your wallet by embracing more reusable microfiber cloths in your home. These can be used to clean everything from countertops to windows and tricky bathroom corners. Best of all, they are machine washable and can be used over and over!

Forget fabric softener.

We all know that the fabrics in our home can collect dust and bacteria so frequent washing is a no-brainer. Most people turn to a quality fabric softener to keep fabrics soft, wrinkle free and smelling fresh however, the toxins in fabric softeners have known linkages to skin irritation and some cancers. Instead, turn to natural remedies such as warm water, vinegars and essential oils to get the job done.

Scent is everything!

Nothing finishes off a proper Spring clean more than a fresh scent throughout your home and these simple, natural air fresheners are a sure winner. In a medium saucepan, simmer a quart of water with natural ingredients to freshen and clean the air. Just make sure not to let the water evaporate completely! Our go-to combinations are;

  • 1 sliced lemon, 2 tablespoons of rosemary and a dash of vanilla extract

  • 1 sliced lime and 1 piece of chopped ginger root

  • 1 sliced lime and 2 tablespoons of thyme

Add a potted plant

Like we need an excuse to buy another indoor plant, but some indoor plants are known especially for their miraculous cleaning powers. As we all know, it’s often the germs and toxins that we can’t see that are the most harmful and by adding just one of these air cleaning plants, the air quality of your home will immediately improve. Our favourites include; Devil's Ivy, Dwarf Date Palm, the Peace Lily, Philodendron and Spider Plant.
