How To: Select artwork for your home.

All it takes is a quick scroll through our Instagram feed to see how much we LOVE art at Perth Style Company... We’ll take an oversized, canvas print in a box frame any day of the week!

Art is a wonderful tool in elevating a room, creating a focal point and expressing true style and personality. In fact, when it comes time to build a new styling concept for one of our projects, art is always the first place we start as it tends to set the theme for the rest of the space.

Yet, art can be a huge investment and therefore it’s super important you make the right decision when adding a piece to your collection. Here are our handy hints on how to pick artwork for your own home.

Think about the space you’re trying to create .

When first pondering artwork for a space, it’s important to consider how you want the room to feel? Are you designing a guest bedroom where you want the feeling to be warm, calm and inviting? Or, are you designing a games room where you want the room to be vibrant, energetic and fun? The overall emotion of a room will greatly influence the art you end up opting for so make sure this is outlined early on to narrow down the search.

Let your interior style direct you.

In order to create a cohesive theme, we suggest letting the overall interior style direct your art choices. If you’re going for a coastal feel, you might want to invest in artwork that supports this theme - Think of the ocean, palm trees, coastlines, boats or surfers. If you’re in an urban, inner-city apartment, you might choose photographic prints of cityscapes, architectural buildings or graffiti to complement the intended design concept.

Do your research.

It might seem like common sense, but we really encourage you to do some research before committing to an artwork purchase. Visit some art galleries, look online and attend local exhibitions. What kind of artists are you attracted to? And, what kind of budget have you got in mind?

In today’s world we see a lot of replicas of artists’ work making the rounds. Where possible, we encourage you to find the original artists involved and show your support for their hard work by purchasing directly from the source. The Arts industry needs our support! If you’re purchasing or commissioning an original piece, finding the right artwork might take a while, but it will be worth the wait, we promise!

Think outside the box.

Now is a great opportunity to think beyond art work or what could hang inside a frame. We’ve never had a wider range of art available to us thanks to the rise of the internet and digital marketing, so make the most of it! Look online at beautiful sculptural pieces, wall tapestries or antique collectables. Each could be a wonderful item to add to your art collection, as well as a great talking piece for when friends and family visit.

Go with your gut.

At the end of the day, art comes down to perspective and preference which means that what you like, your friends or family might not like and vice versa. Our advice is purchase something you absolutely LOVE and be prepared that not every single person will share that love... If you feel a connection with a piece of artwork, trust this instinct and you’ll be sure to love it for years to come!
