Look for inspiration

Looking to inspirational sources is often the starting point of any good interior design project but we often find people do not spend enough time at this stage - instead rushing into all the exciting, creative parts of the project. Before racing into it, spend some time looking for nods to the 80’s across a range of mediums and really think about how you could work this trend into your existing home. Maybe it’s just a particular colour pop, splurging on an accent furniture piece or working some textures like boucle into your home that immediately screams 80’s décor.  Whatever route you choose, make sure your new styling elements compliment your existing home, whilst adding a fun, trendy twist.

Get into up-cycling

We’ve certainly seen the 80’s décor trends hitting the Australian furniture and homewares stores over the last few months but this is also a wonderful opportunity to take a sustainable approach to styling your home. Hit up your local thrift or antique stores and see if you can nab yourself a sweet treat whilst shopping second hand that you can easily up-cycle and modernise. Ever heard of ‘grandmillennial’? It’s a modern phrase that’s gaining traction and refers to anything ‘old school’ you remember in your grandparent’s house growing up. Taking your mind back to their homes will quickly help guide your 80’s picks when shopping for your own home. Think dining chairs, side boards or coffee tables which can be easily up-cycled to get the 80’s look for less.

From the ground up

If you’re feeling a little more daring, we have also seen a huge surge in 80’s features making their way into new building designs. This is such an awesome way to add special interest to your home, injecting life and personality, ensuring you’ll have anything but a stock-standard new home! Our top 80’s inspired picks would be geometric tiling, glass block windows, brass fixtures and pastel colour accents – or better yet, why not all of the above?!

Get green-er!

We have seen indoor plants doing the rounds in interiors for quite a number of years now but in the 80’s era, where more was more, house plants were the go-to. Back then, greenery was everywhere! From living rooms to bathrooms and everything in between, indoor plants are a great way to add that extra 80’s touch in your own home. Not only are they mega-trendy, warming up our homes but they are also great for cleaning our air – it’s a huge win-win! Think spider plants and philodendron for that classic 80’s look.
