Creating an Edible Garden for your home.
Creating a garden can be one way you can turn your house into a home. Not only is it an efficient way to elevate your indoor and outdoor spaces, but it also is a great way to get out of the house, embrace your inner zen and grow fresh nutritious food and flavourful herbs. The four S’s will help prepare you before you take out your tools and get digging!
Space
How much of it do you have? A garden can be as big as your backyard or as small as a pot on your kitchen shelf. Knowing the space you have will help you make decisions on whether you will be growing herbs or a full fledged array of vegetables. Balconies, porches and small courtyards are great areas for gardens that are often overlooked when planning out your home space.
Soil
For most plants, a free draining soil is best. These soils should be rich in soil life, have a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6 to 7) and be rich in organic matter. These soils can be purchased at all garden centres.
Seeds
Now the fun part, choosing what you are going to grow! Some things you will need to consider are:
Picking favourites - What do you personally love to include in your dishes! Having these accessible in your own back yard will be very beneficial and rewarding
Climate - Some plants are not suited well to certain climates. These will not thrive in your backyard. Don’t take it personally
Season - What plants are going to flourish this time of year? Most seed packets will explain this or talk to a garden centre expert for more information on what choices will be best for the season
Sunlight
Where is your garden going to sit? It needs to be in a space that is exposed to sunlight as well as partial shade. It is also important that there is an easily accessible water source near your garden for ease of maintenance and regular watering. A flat area is best suited for a garden. If opting for a smaller indoor garden, make sure it is near a window for optimal amounts of sunlight.
